Unwrap Christmas tips for digital marketing success

The Christmas countdown has officially begun! 🎁 No need for magic here, we’ve got your back with practical digital marketing strategies to turn clicks into gifts.

Customer mindsets: Know them & adapt

November & December is a crucial time for many retailers. Conversion rates skyrocket as customers are in full-on buying mode.

To make the most of the golden quarter you first need to know your customers’ mindsets & be aware of how they change throughout the festive season.

Top Tip

Adopt a marketing strategy of continuously reviewing & adapting budgets to reflect your customers’ mindset. Don’t be afraid to adjust your spend even if Christmas plans were set months ago. Flexibility is key to avoiding wasting budget.

Different Mindsets, Different Strategies

Deliberate

They start early, researching the perfect gift.

Deliberate shoppers are looking to spread spending throughout the season.

Be ready with engaging content well before October. Capture customer’s attention during their research stage.
Although you may not see sales this early on, by providing information & social proof customers will feel confident to purchase when the time is right for them.

What to do

Keyphrase market research & create informational content.

For example: If you’re selling luxury chocolate explain why you have the best chocolates.
Where has the cocoa has been sourced from?
What’s the quality of your ingredients?
How do they create that special moment at Christmas?

Deal-seeking

An “always-on”, value-driven mindset.

They’re not loyal to brands. They don’t pay full price. But they do want the right quality & value for their hard-earned cash.

What to do

Make sure customers are aware of your deals during the research phase.

Encourage brand engagement such as email sign-ups & social follows. Keep them in the know when a deal is to be had & tempt them back to your site to purchase.

Determined

Typical mindset for early December.

They leave it late but want a smooth buying process.

Google reports 57% of holiday shopping is done in December, so make sure you keep some of your marketing budget for the late-season push.

What to do

They may be at risk of missing shipping dates so highlight key delivery dates, in-store options, store locations & opening hours. Make the checkout process super simple.
Vouchers & last-minute gifts are simple ways to target these customers.

For example: We looked at site search data when working with a video games retailer. We found a huge increase in voucher searches in the last quarter of the year.

We created a homepage feature leading customers directly to vouchers.

The retailer sold 3x as many vouchers compared to previous years.

Devoted

They keep shopping after Christmas is over.

We’re all aware that once Christmas is over customers will hit the Boxing Day or January sales. But the devoted shopper will keep shopping long after Christmas, looking for treats or year-round gifts.
The key during this time is to nurture these relationships & build consumer confidence.

Google reports that confident shoppers are 6x more likely to buy again.

What to do

Retarget & keep the customer engaged throughout the year by updating your content.

We find many retailers keep their Christmas content well into the new year. Instead, be ready to switch up your website content & ad creatives as soon as the season ends to stay relevant with shoppers.

The holiday season is a prime time to connect with new & existing customers. But remember there’s no one-size-fits-all. Keep your campaign flexible to meet real-time trends & stay true to your business.

Remember

Not all customer mindsets will apply to your brand. Choose the ones that fit & target them with tailored content.

For example: if you’re a luxury retailer you’re not likely to target the deal-seeking mindset. Discounting your products may cheapen your brand or erode customer trust in the quality of your products.
